QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

BEFORE WAXING

WE DO NOT RECOMMEND WAX IF

  • Take pain relief medication at least 20 minutes beforehand may help dull your pain receptors (as long as your doctor does not contraindicate it).
  • Day of waxing, limit caffeine intake as it stimulates the nervous system and makes you prone to sensitivity and redness.
  • For menstrual cycles, try to schedule your appointment within the first two weeks after ending your cycle (as this is when you retain the least amount of fluid and should be less sensitive). We do wax clients if they are currently on their cycle or have heavy flow as long as they wear a tampon and know the risks of being sensitive.
  • For body waxing treatments, please allow about 3-4 weeks of growth before your visit. The longer the growth (within reason) will mean less tweezing and a cleaner wax. Your hair must be at least half the length of your pinky nail (go ahead… check your pinky!).
  • If you do not wax or shave your hair at all, please do not trim beforehand. If trimming is needed, we will do it for you.
  • Do not apply self-tanner, moisturizer, or any abrasive body or facial scrubs.
  • Do not go sit in the sun or go to the tanning booth prior to your service.
  • Discontinue using any product that exfoliates or dries the skin for at least 1 week prevents tears, scabbing or burning.
  • Avoid getting spray tanned before any waxing procedure. Wax tends to lift the color off your skin leaving it patchy-looking.
  • Some products that conflict with waxing are: Accutane, Differin, Retin A/Retinol, Glycolic acid/AHA’s, ProActive, Avita, Benzoyl peroxide, Salicylic acid/ BHA’s Please note; new products come out every day, and these the most common products used. If you are in doubt, do not use it or do not wax.
IF YOU HAVE A MOLE?
We avoid waxing over raised mole(s). We trim any hair coming from the area and wax around it.

IF YOU HAVE A VARICOSE VEINS?
Our recommendation is not waxing over prominent varicose veins because you risk exposing the vein, which can cause bleeding if it is close to the skin’s surface.

IF YOU HAVE DIABETES?
Yes, you can, but please make us aware and know the risks involved.

IF YOU ARE ON YOUR PERIOD?
Of course, just be aware that hormones can affect skin sensitivity. We recommend you wear a tampon during the service. Many clients wax during their cycle with little effect, but only you know your body, so do what is best for you.

IF YOU HAVE “MATURE” SKIN?
Absolutely. If you are taking any medications or using topical cosmetic products that cause skin sensitivity or skin thinning we cannot. These creams contain ingredients that make your skin “lift” which almost looks like a little burn mark. Ingredients in these products are retinol, alpha hydroxyl acids, retinoid, bleaching agents like hydroquinone.

IF YOU HAVE DONE LASER HAIR REMOVAL BEFORE?
Welcome back into the world of waxing! However, you must wait at least 3-4 weeks after the last laser hair removal session because the skin can still be quite sensitive from the laser treatment. Please note that waxing will lessen the effectiveness of laser hair removal because the laser needs to target the root of the hair, and waxing removes the hair from the root.

DO NOT WAX IF

  • You have a sunburn
  • You have been or plan on being in the sun or tanning bed within 24 hours
  • If you’ve recently had treatments such as: Chemical Peel, Dermabrasion, Microdermabrasion or Cosmetic Injections
  • You are currently taking acne medication such as: Accutane (affects all body waxing), Retin-A (affects areas the cream is used on) or any other prescribed acne medication. After 6 months of completing your acne medication, your skin will be less sensitive and less prone to scarring and you will be able to wax again.
  • Consult your Doctor or Dermatologist about any other concerns.

AFTER  WAXING

Be sure to keep the waxed area clean, DO NOT TOUCH, and avoid heat and friction during the next 24 to 48 hours. This means:

  • No hot baths or showers (washing with cool or lukewarm water is fine)
  • No saunas, hot tubs or steam rooms
  • No tanning (sunbathing, sunbeds or fake tans)
  • No sport, gym work or other exercise
  • Avoid touching the waxed skin with unwashed hands
  • Wear clean, loose fitting clothing
  • Avoid swimming
  • Do not apply deodorants, body sprays, powders, lotions or other products to the area, other than those recommended by your therapist
  • Exfoliate! To ensure your next wax is smoother and prevent ingrown hairs, we suggest exfoliating 2 times a week in the shower. By doing this, dead skin and oils are removed from the surface of the skin so the hair is able to grow back evenly with minimal irritation.

EXFOLIATION

After waxing, we recommend you wait 3 days before exfoliating because your pores have been opened when the hair was removed and your skin could still be sensitive.

Wet the desired area then using a sponge, loofah, scrub, brush or glove, rub in the opposite direction of hair growth.

INGROWN HAIR

An ingrown hair is one that is growing back into your skin instead of rising up from the skin.

Sometimes, dead skin can clog a hair follicle. That forces the hair to grow sideways under your skin, rather than up and out.

The causes of ingrown hairs are:

      • When clothing rubs against the skin after a hair removal service
      • Clothing is too tight and rubbing against the skin on a normal basis
      • Irritation from a product
      • Shaving

WAXING VS. SHAVING

  • Waxing results last longer than shaving
  • Waxing has less chance of getting ingrown hairs or rashes
  • Waxing has lower cost than laser hair removal
  • Waxing is suitable for almost all skin and hair types; whereas with laser the color of your hair matters for the effectiveness as well as the type of laser they use
HOW DO I GET RID OF INGROWN HAIRS?
We recommend exfoliating twice a week and moisturize daily to keep your skin soft for easy hair grown.
SOMETIMES WHEN I WAX I GET RED BUMPS, IS THIS NORMAL?
Yes, it is!  It is a CONTACT DERMATITIS and can occur after waxing.  It is a red rash caused by direct contact with a substance or an allergic reaction to it. The rash is not contagious or life-threatening.

If you get a rash after waxing, apply a cool compress or take a cool shower to reduce irritation and sensibility. Avoid hot baths or showers. Wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid friction and irritation. Avoid perfumed products, lotions, and creams, which can irritate sensitive skin.

Usually the redness is mostly gone after 30 minutes to an hour from service. Avoid perfumes, scrubs and other skin irritants the day of your service.

If you are going to a special occasion, we recommend waxing a month before to see how your skin reacts. If everything is fine, schedule another wax a day or two before your event.

I GOT MY EYEBROWS WAXED ONCE AND SOME SKIN CAME OFF, WHY IS THAT?
If you are using skin care products that contain salicylic acid, glycolic acid or alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) of any kind, these can cause the skin to lift while waxing. Another cause might be aggressive exfoliation such as microdermabrasion or chemical peels. Prescription medication such as antibiotics, Accutane, Retin-A, Renova, Strivectin, proactive, and average can cause thinning of the skin which results in lifting during waxing. There are numerous factors and is difficult to predict how skin will react no matter how many precautions are taken. All specialists are trained and here for you to answer questions about specific aftercare whenever needed.
HOW LONG THE HAIR DOES HAVE TO BE TO WAX?
Hair should be about ¼ inch long, 3-4 weeks of hair growth. Do not trim as shorter hairs are harder to remove.
I HAVE WAXED BEFORE, MY SKIN BECCAME SPOTTY AND HAD SOME INGROWN HAIRS.
Some are prone to ingrown hairs than others are not. We recommend exfoliation no more than twice a week and the use of homecare products will minimize the chances of skin reactions or ingrown hairs.
Exfoliate 3 days after your waxing service.

Apply an ingrown serum twice a day to clean the hair follicle from the inside out.

Hydrate. Hydrate by moisturizing your skin to allow the hair to grow through and prevent breakage during waxing.

OVER THE TIME, I WILL NOT HAVE TO WAX ANYMORE.
It is unlikely, however, the hair will grow back finer and will start to thin out over time
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO MY HAIR TO GROW BACK?
All hair types are different, however a typical range is 3-6 weeks for most waxing services. The more you wax the thinner and lighter the hair becomes. Regular waxing intervals gives you optimum results.
SHOULD I TRIM MY HAIR BEFORE COMING IN?
Leave the trimming to us. It is better to have the hair longer then too short.
DOES WAXING MAKE YOUR HAIR GROW BACK THICKER?
No. Waxing retards the hair follicle, which over time will reduce the hair growth.

WILL IT HURT?

Yes, but varies based on your pain threshold.

Taking anti-inflammatory medications such as Advil or Tylenol, at least 20 minutes prior to your appointment will help ease the discomfort (as long as it’s not contraindicated by your doctor). We use high quality waxes for sensitive skin. We recommend you avoid caffeine and alcohol as these can stimulate, making you more sensitive and increase redness after waxing. Pregnancy also increases sensitivity.

CAN I SHAVE IN BETWEEN WAXES?
We recommend you do not shave in between waxes as it affects the consistency of your hair growth. Shaving also cuts the hair on the surface causing more of a chance for ingrown hairs.
